Corporate leadership is a tale of resolution in the face of adversity and brave people standing by their convictions. It is also the tale that forms the plot of the George Clooney directed film, Good Night and Good Luck that Bernie Cooper says is one of the best films he’s seen.

“The really great films are the ones where the director lets the writers, the performing artists, the camera people and all the crew have a fair bit of leeway so that they can bring their own creativity to the game,” Bernie Cooper says.

This is just like the role of CEO. Smart CEOs gather a team and allow each member to fulfil their individual creative potential for the benefit of the business as a whole.

“It’s important to have each of your key leaders capable of getting, what VogelPercy call Personal Mastery into the group wisdom and as a CEO not be too controlling of that. It’s important to provide freedom to people within guidelines.”

“It’s easy to buy coherent systems off the shelf or develop them yourself,” Bernie Cooper says. “The difference between organisations that make it and the ones that are really ordinary is having superior leaders who can help the group perform well. To me this is the challenge of a Chief Executive as distinct from a manager.”

In 2004 Silcar sought the services of VogelPercy to help address issues such as the lack of alignment between key people and the organisation’s objectives. “Our group is now a lot more aware of itself and a lot more robust in handling misalignment from time to time.

“There is a big difference between disagreement and lack of agreement. And lack of agreement was our problem. Now our key people can recognise what they’re missing, and they know what to do to fix it,” Bernie Cooper says.

“Our organisation has 2,500 people. We used to have leadership logjams that took a couple of months to sort out. Our people still
have disagreements, but now we can see them for what they are, and we’re able to talk about them, and we can get through them in
a couple of days. This is a result of our interaction with VogelPercy,” says Bernie Cooper.

Asked about one of the most important lessons he has learned in his role as a CEO, Bernie Cooper doesn’t hesitate to say: “People. Have good people. And if you haven’t got them, you have to get them. Then encourage them to grow and reach Personal Mastery. There’s so much to come from that.”

And there’s so much to come from being true to your convictions and having the right people on your team to back you up. In the McCarthy era, Ed Murrow and Fred Friendly were two team players who did what they had to do to be true to themselves and their country. And as it happens, their principles were also aligned with the core values that Bernie Cooper and his Silcar team operate by: ethics, bright ideas and a determination to succeed.
